Wren

A brand new day. The sun shone and the birds chirped as waves lapped against the side of the boat. When I’d booked the cruise, I hadn’t imagined how relaxing it would be. Nothing like the sound of the water to lull me to sleep at night. For the first little bit, I’d felt the boat swaying. But once I’d dropped off, I’d slept like a baby, content in knowing I was on vacation and didn’t need to think about work.

I’d spent the morning watching them pilot the boat into the dock, then ventured out for breakfast. Doubtful I’d ever get used to the amount of food that shifters consumed. I’d never eaten with the students before—and even then, I couldn’t imagine they ate as much as the alphas aboard the ship.

“Sorry to bother you, but are those seats taken?” a voice asked.

I turned away from the sight of St. Thomas to find a tall, lean man standing next to my table, a heaping plate of food clutched in his hands.

When I didn’t immediately respond, he grimaced and glanced at the empty seats next to me. “There’s nowhere else to sit, unfortunately.”

Ah, yes. I’d noticed that earlier. It’d felt like I’d entered a battleground earlier when I’d come hunting for my own table. Even at seven in the morning, I’d been lucky to find this three-seater near the bow of the ship.

“Of course,” I said, gesturing toward the two empty seats. “Just let me clean up my dishes, and I’ll get out of your hair.”

“No need.” He hooked his toe around one of the chair legs and scooted it closer toward him. “If you’re up to it, I wouldn’t mind the company.”

Any other day, I might have turned down his offer. Today, though, I nodded. What was the point of a cruise if not to meet new people? And I’d promised myself I would meet as many shifters as possible—for research sake, of course.

“My name’s Alvin.” He lowered his plate down onto the table, then jutted his hand toward me.

“Wren,” I said with a smile before shaking it.

“Like the bird. But you aren’t one.”

“That easy to tell, huh?”

A sharp smile spread across his face, and he tapped his nose. “Definitely. Part of being a shifter.”

“Must be nice.” I leaned on the table. “Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to be a shifter. To change forms, to fly, or run…”

“That part’s great.” He chuckled and shoveled his first fork-load into his mouth. “But it has its downfalls, too.”

“Oh?”

Another mouthful of food. He chewed, swallowed, then pointed around the deck. “Notice anything about the seating arrangements?”

I stole a glance around the room and shrugged. Looked normal to me. People seated around tables, chatting as they finished their breakfast and drank their coffee.

“All the alphas,” Alvin said. “Maybe you can’t see it like we can. But very few submissives are seated at the tables.”

I took a closer look. Like he said, I couldn’t see it like he did, but there was something.
